American conductor and tenor, Nathaniel Romero, is described as being “at his lyrical and soul-searching best” according to a review by the Cleveland Classical. Mr. Romero is known as a prominent conductor and organizer of many student-led ensembles at the Oberlin Conservatory of Music, engaging in the performances of works by Rachmaninoff, Bartók, Thompson, Montgomery, Charpentier, Victoria, and the world premiere performance of Rolando J. Gomez’s The Moth. While engaging in various student-led ensembles, Mr. Romero has served as the Assistant Conductor to Mo. Joseph Mechavich, Gregory Ristow, and Ben Johns in the performances of Beethoven’s Ninth Symphony, Dett’s Ordering of Moses, Brahms’ Ein Deutsches Requiem, Poulenc’s Gloria, Rossini’s L’occasione fa il ladro, and Offenbach’s Les mariage aux lanternes, assisting three major performances at Carnegie Hall. Singing in choruses, Mr. Romero has sung professionally for the Detroit Symphony Orchestra in their performances of Mahler’s Second Symphony, the Oberlin Musical Union in their performances of Dett’s Ordering of Moses, Mendelssohn’s Elijah, and the United Nations Gala Performance of Beethoven’s Ninth Symphony working under the batons of Mo. Jader Bignamini, Raphael Jimenez, and Gregory Ristow.
As a soloist, Mr. Romero is known for his vocal versatility, having performed works from Handel’s Messiah, Orff’s Carmina Burana, Donizetti’s La Fille du Regiment, Britten’s War Requiem and the entirety of Schumann's Dichterliebe. Mr. Romero’s operatic engagements at the Oberlin Conservatory of Music include performances as Paolino in Cimarosa’s Il Matrimonio Segreto, the Lead Role in Bernstein’s Candide, scenes as Rudolfo in Puccini’s La Boheme, and the “Old Man” in the concert and staged workshop world premiere performance of the first scene from Stephen Hartke’s Rhino!. Having sung as a solo chorister in the Oberlin Chamber Singers, Mr. Romero engaged in the performances of Bach’s Christ Lag in Todes Banden, BWV 4 and Wachet Auf, Ruft Uns Die Stimme, BWV 140, as well as Menotti’s The Unicorn, The Gorgon, and the Manticore. Mr. Romero has also engaged in the chamber group performance of Brahms’ Neue Liebeslieder, op. 65 collaborating with Mo. Joseph Mechavich and Dr. Kyung-Eun Na. Mr. Romero is presently affiliated with the American Choral Directors Association, the Southern California Vocal Directors Association, the Inland Master Chorale. Mr. Romero serves as a Conducting Adjudicator for the Student Academy of Musical Leaders and is an Instructor of Applied Voice and Piano at the University of Redlands’ Community School of Music and Arts.
Mr. Romero holds a Bachelor of Music degree from the Oberlin Conservatory of Music in Vocal Performance having studied under Kendra Colton, and expects to graduate from the University of Redlands Conservatory of Music with a Master of Music degree in Conducting.
